The species Bovine rhinitis B
virus belongs to the genus Aphthovirus
and consists of a single serotype, bovine rhinitis B virus.
So far only one virus isolate has been described, EC-11 and it was
originally named bovine rhinovirus 2 (BRV-2; Reed
et al., 1971). Initial partial sequence analysis of the BRV-2 genome
showed that it was more closely related to the aphthoviruses than to
the rhinoviruses (Knowles, 2005). Since then the (nearly) complete
genome sequence of EC-11 has been published and the relationship to
the aphthoviruses confirmed (Hollister et al., 2008).
