The species Theilovirus consists of 12 genotypically different viruses (which may also be distinct serotypes): Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV), Vilyuisk human encephalomyelitis virus (VHEV), Thera virus (TRV), Saffold virus (SAFV) 1, SAFV-2, SAFV-3, SAFV-4, SAFV-5, SAFV-6, SAFV-7, SAFV-8 and SAFV-9.
