The species
Bovine enterovirus consists of at least two serogroups:
bovine enterovirus (BEV) A
and BEV-B. It has been proposed that BEV-A
and BEV-B should be two distinct species (Knowles, 2005; Zell et al., 2006).
Additionally, it has been proposed to rename enterovirus
species to remove host names (currently being considered
by the ICTV Executive Committee). If accepted the
species Bovine enterovirus would no longer
exist and BEV-A would become Enterovirus E
and BEV-B would become Enterovirus F
and the types would be renamed as proposed below.
The BEVs are currently divided into two groups, A and B, and
10 types (see

*, replaces the isolate known as BEV-1 (Washington/57; Moll and Davis,
1959) since VG(5)27 has been more extensively studied.
A BEV has recently been reported from a bottlenose dolphin (EU886967;
Nollens et al., 2009); it belongs to type BEV-A1.
Two viruses isolated from possums in New
Zealand belong to BEV-B4.
