Fathead minnow picornavirus (FHMPV) has been isolated in cell cultures from both fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and brassy minnows (Hybognathus hankinsoni) in various states in the USA (McCann, 2012; Phelps et al., 2014). The fathead and brassy minnows belong to the family Cyprinidae.

FHMPV is most closely related to carp picornavirus and bluegill picornavirus, but may have an extra 2A polypeptide (99 aa) following VP1. These three viruses probably represent three new picornavirus species in a new genus.
