The genus Megrivirus contains a single species Melegrivirus A. The names Megrivirus and Melegrivirus are derived from the turkey genus name Meleagris / Meleagris.

A related picornavirus (mesivirus) has recently been detected in feral pigeons (Phan et al., 2013). Mesiviruses may belong to a new species within the genus Megrivirus or be representatives of a novel picornavirus genus.

Other related megriviruses have been found in chickens (Farkas et al., 2012; Boros et al., 2014) and ducks (Liao et al., 2014).
