The genus Parechovirus is comprised of two species, Human parechovirus and Ljungan virus. The former contains at least three serotypes, human parechovirus (HPeV) 1 and HPeV-2 which were formerly known as human echovirus types 22 and 23, and the recently described HPeV-3. Ljungan virus is a recently described virus of bank voles which may be comprised of two or more serotypes.
