Smelt virus-1 (SmV-1) is a picorna-like virus isolated on the CHSE-214 (chinook salmon) cell line in August 1986 from rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) in New Brunswick, Canada (Moore et al., 1988). The virus was resistant to ether, pH 3.0 and heating to 37 °C for 24 h. It was inactivated after 6 h at 56 °C.

Smelt virus-2 (SmV-2) is a picorna-like virus of the European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) (Ahne et al., 1990).

Rainbow smelt picornavirus (Fijan, 1999)

European smelt picornavirus (Hetrick and Hedrick, 1993)
