Bovine enteroviruses have been isolated (or detected by RT-PCR) in many animals and from environmental samples.

BEVs appear to have a wide host range. They have been isolated from cattle (REFS), water buffalo (Mehrotra, 1973), sheep and goats (Jain and Batra, 1985; Sharma et al., 1986), African buffalo and impala (Hamblin et al., 1985). Neutralizing antibodies have been detected in different species including man, cattle, sheep, goats, dogs, horses and monkeys (Moscovici et al., 1961; McFerran, 1962; Yamada, 1965).

In Spain, faeces from cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys, and horses and water samples were obtained from five areas in the following provinces: Madrid, Seville, Cáceres, Teruel and Huelva. Using a sensitive real-time RT-PCR targeted at the 5' UTR the authors were able to amplify and sequence BEV-like viruses from concentrated water sources (watering tank, creek water, swamp water and river water) indicating widespread environmental contamination. They also demonstrated the presence of BEVs in cattle, sheep and horses, but not donkeys.
