The species Ampivirus A is the type species of the genus Ampivirus.

The complete genome sequence of a novel picornavirus has been found in the faeces of free-living smooth newts (Lissotriton vulgaris) (Reuter et al., 2015). This is the first description of a picornavirus in amphibians. The authors have named the agent ampivirus from amphibian picornavirus.
