Welcome to the home of Picornaviruses
The family Picornaviridae belongs to the
order Picornavirales
and consists of 12 genera:
Enterovirus,
Cardiovirus,
Aphthovirus,
Hepatovirus,
Parechovirus,
Erbovirus,
Kobuvirus,
Teschovirus,
Sapelovirus,
Senecavirus,
Tremovirus and
Avihepatovirus. The
two original human rhinovirus species have been moved to the genus Enterovirus;
the genus Rhinovirus no longer exists. The
Sapelovirus, Senecavirus,
Tremovirus and Avihepatovirus
genera (along with a number of new picornavirus species) were formally
recognised by the ICTV in August 2009.
Two other picornaviruses, whose genomes have recently been
completely sequenced, have been proposed as belonging to novel genera are
seal picornavirus 1 and
human cosavirus.
Proposals to designate these as such are in preparation. Thus in the near future
the Picornaviridae will probably consist of 14 genera and
33
species.
Please note that formally and informally proposed taxa are
indicated by their names being displayed in quotation marks and are
non-italicised. These names should be used with caution as it is possible that
they could change before final acceptance by the ICTV (see the
Picornaviridae Study
Group pages for more information). In publications
these should be referred to as, for example:
...the proposed genus "Sapelovirus"
...the proposed species "Porcine kobuvirus"
Other new picornaviruses...
>> Saffold
viruses: new members of the species
Theilovirus
in man.
>> A new candidate species of
kobuvirus has been reported from
pigs, tentatively named porcine
kobuvirus.
>> An enterovirus has recently been reported from a bottlenose dolphin (Nollens
et al.,
unpublished); the sequence (EU886967)
identifies it as a
bovine enterovirus.
