Virus common name: Bovine rhinitis A virus

The species Bovine rhinitis A virus (from Feb 2012) belongs to the genus Aphthovirus and consists of two serotypes, bovine rhinitis A virus 1 (BRAV-1) and BRAV-2, formerly known as bovine rhinovirus 1 and bovine rhinovirus 3, respectively. Initial partial sequence analysis of the BRV-1 and BRV-3 genomes showed they were more closely related to the aphthoviruses than to the rhinoviruses (Knowles, 2005). Since then the (nearly) complete genome sequences of both types have been determined and the relationship to the aphthoviruses confirmed (Piccone et al., 2009, 2010).
